Chapter 15

Responder's rebid after the 2NT relay (opener bids 3C; for (2D)-X and (2H)-X the relay is "BML: 3C or 3D"):
(2D)-X: after (2D)-X-4C, 4D asks which. (2S)-X: 4NT direct is RKC, quant after slow cue; cueing 4M after 2NT is a minor slam try but complicated.
  • Negative Doubles/Takeout: replaces Stayman: 1) perfect takeout 4-7, 2) Can handle the auction (4-7), 3) Invitational 8+. 2NT by Opener is scrambling over (2M).
  • 1NT-(2X)-2NT-3C:
  • Weak hands: Sign-off bids
  • Cue for Clubs: semi-stopper6+ clubs GF (Radu plays this as semi stopper, same as he plays after his weak 2 Leb and Leb after 1m-(2M))
  • 6C+4M, Bid Above 3X:  If could have made 2-level bid of M, 2N-3C-3M is 6+C and 4M (1NT-(2D)-2NT-3C-3H).
  • 3NT: To play don’t use slow, Slow Shows. 2NT then 3NT shows stopper. 3NT direct denies.
  • Direct Cue: Asking for stopper, shortness
  • Transfers at 3-level: Skip their suit, show 5+ invitational or better
  • Opener: accepting shows min unless fit makes you want to upgrade. Can cue with max, no fit, not stopper. Can super accept and show stopper above 3NT (1NT-(2H)-3D (spades inv+)-4C)
  • Unused Bids. 3M 55m GF: If they showed S, 3H bid not used so 55m GF. If they showed H, 3S bid not used so 55m GF
  • Re-entering: X of natural is takeout, X of artificial is natural
  • Cue/Slow Cue for stoppers:
  • Cue asks for stopper
  • Slow cue asks for semi-stopper
  • 3NT/Slow 3NT – To play or COG (slow shows 4#M):
  • 3NT to play
  • Slow 3NT, stopper and 4#M (just like our (2M)-X)
  • Transfers Invite: 5#+
  • Transfer invites, skipping their suit (accepting transfer is not accepting game invite)
  • Unused bids show both minors (direct) or clubs and major (slow shows 4#M):
  • Unused bids are minors and GF
  • 1m-(2H)-3S (because you would transfer to spades with 3D
  • 1m-(2S)-3H (because you would transfer to hearts with 3D
  • Slow unused bids are 5# clubs and 4# oM
  • 1m-(2H)-2NT-3C-3S (with just 5#+S transfer)
Sidenote, because this came up … 1H-(2S).

Radu says:

1H-(2S)-2NT: LR 3+
1S-(2H): 3H is 3-card LR, 2NT is 4+ LR (we do this too, extended Jordan)
3m: Natural (they play switch but not necessary for us)
GF Bids (Cues and 3NTs, Direct no 4#M)
  • Direct Cue: No 4#M, no stopper
  • Direct 3NT: No 4#M, stopper
  • Slow Cue: semi-stopper ask4#M, no stopper
  • Slow 3NT: 4#M, with stopper (Choice of Games)
  • 4m over (2M)-X. 4#M GF and 5#+m
Invitational Bids (slow show 4#M)
  • (2H)-X:
  • Slow 3S: 4#
  • 3S: 5#
  • (2S)-X:
  • No Slow here. Slow has to be signoff
  • 3H: 4# or 5# invitational
  • 3D Direct. Not 3C Direct, because after 2NT doubler bids better minor, per Radu conversation 11/1/25 invitational here is 8-11ish.

Non-Invitational Bids:

  • 3C Direct: 0-10
  • Slow bids under 3-level of preempt.
Other Bids
  • Better Minor over (2M)-X-2NT. Xer shows better minor. With this you give up 3C direct bid being invitational, has to be 0-10.
  • Doubler can bypass after 2NT, 1) New Suit: natural & big, 2) Cue GF, 3) 3N To play
  • NOT FOR DAN: Note: Radu does this differently, like his other Leb uses cue to ask for stopper and slow cue to ask for semi-stopper
  • Slam tries. We agreed (1/14/23), 4NT directly after (2M)-X is RKC for other major. Going through 2NT-3C first is quantitative. 2NT-3C then cue at their 4M is slam try in a minor.
