Chapter 16
Doubles, Overcalls and Other Competitive Bids
Card:
- Generally non-jump responses 0-7, jumps 8 to bad 11 with 5-card suit jumps
- We had this come up: (P)-P-(1C)-X. We asked Radu if range and length of 2H, said would rarely jump to 2M with only 4 cards, unless maybe with 11, otherwise just bid 1h and if P raises w 4h and 15-17, then can re-evaluate
We had this situation: (P)-1C-(2NT red suits)-P-(3D)-X. Radu says definitely takeout. Can’t make a penalty double in front of 2-suiter when partner never bid. If opener doubles as his second bid, always takeout, unless partner XX initially or if he doubles 2NT here to penalize. Then all subsequent doubles are penalty.
1Y-(X)-XX: then all doubles are penalty
1Y-(2Y/2NT)-X: then all doubles are penalty
- 6+/1, 8+/2m, 9+/2M, 10/3
- 4 in at least one unbid, except both with 1♣-(1♦)-X
- one major at 2-level, could be 5 at 2-lev if 6-9
- Rebids:
- Support w/ 4, 1m-(1H)-x-2S doesn’t promise points just 4.
- Rebid a 5, preferably 6
- Bid NT w/ stopper, note: 5/7/26 Radu says better to bid 1NT if you’re forced to make a bid then showing support w/ 3
- New suit naturally
- Cue w/ strong w/o stopper
- Support w/ 3 (last resort)
- After partner takeout
- 6+ at 2, 8+ at 3, 10+ at 4
- LHO-X-RHO raise
- shows 4-4, in ♥♠ if they ♦♣, in ♣♦ if they ♥♠
- At high levels over major raises, responsive X denies the other major, (2H)-X-(3H)
- (2S)-X-(4S)-X is just values, partner can pull with nice distributional hand, 4NT is two suiter
- After major fit found
- Game try vs preempt
- 1♥-(2♦)-2♥-(3♦)-X
- (1♥)-1♠-(2♥)-2♠-(3♥)-X
- Only if suit below, GT otherwise
- 3-card support, only after responder bids 1M, and RHO o/c below 2M (on after 1NT o/c or cue bid of suit opened)
- If RHO opens 1♥ or 1♠, with 5♦ and 4M, make takeout double and if partner bids 2♣, make the ELCD to 2♦ showing 5♦ and the 4-card major (only time that a double followed by a voluntary bid of a new suit does NOT show the “big double”.
- Example:
- Ax AK98 JTxxx xx over 1♠ bid X, then if partner bids 2♣ bid 2♦.
- Can also be used after 2♥ or 2♠ RHO, so with AQxx xx AKxxx xx, make a takeout double then can bid 3♦ over 3♣.
- If our Preempt is doubled, XX is Q or better
- Lead higher of remaining two suits. At favorable vul should be you have that suit and are able to save against their game (Radu).
- Means I would have bid that
Overcall ranges:
> 1-level:
- 7+ to 17, more sound when vul
- Really need good suit, good hand or good distribution.
- Careful with 5332.
> 2-level (signaling opening hand):
- Really like to have 6-card suit (especially in minors) or compensating values, especially vul (in minors, 6-card suit or more than an opening hand), even better if partner is passed hand
- If you’re thinking of preempting at 3-level, never OK to downgrade to 2-level
Advancing 1-level overcall (1A)-1X-(P):
- Support bids:
- Cue bid 2A: 3#+ LR+ (Plays promises a fit, 100%)
- Jump cue 3A: Mixed 4#
- 2X: 3# 6-10
- 3X: Weak 4#
- 4X: 5# support (Shouldn’t worry about missing slam)
- Without fit:
- 1-level new suit NF: 7-16 4#+ (of 1-level overcall)
- 2-level new suit NF: 10-16 5#
- 1NT: 8 to 12- with stoppers
- 2NT: 12+ to 15- and stoppers
- GF bids: strong JS (all GF rules apply, only strong JS)
- BPH: Fit JS, 4# support and side 5# suit (normally you need 2 of top 3 honors for FJS, but here not really looking for slam)
Advancing 2-level overcall (1A)-2X-(P):
- Support bids:
- Cue bid 2A: 3#+ LR+ (promises fit)
- 3X: Weak with support
- Without fit:
- New suit forcing: 5#
- 2NT: Invite with stoppers (but push for game with good 11-12, counting a good hand from partner on sound 2-level overcall)
(1x)-1M-(P) reviewing above:
Double cue mixed
Cue LR
3M weak
2NT balanced 12+-15-
JS forcing
(1x)-1M-(2x raise):
LR: cue 3, 2nt 4 if both available, otherwise 2NT is LR
3M: mixed red, white more flexible, can be weak white v red
(1x)-1M-(2y):
Keeping 2NT balanced 12+-15- (unlikely)
Lower cue 3 higher cue 4 if both available
3M same as (1x)-1M-(2x)
1NT free bid by opener:
1x-1y-(1z):
X=support double
2y=-4-card support \<17
1NT=17-19
2z cue = 17-19 with 4-card support unbalanced
2NT=17-19 with 4-card support balanced
- 1S: Natural NF if available
- Transfers including 1NT transfer to clubs
- LR: Transfer to their suit
- 2-card XX: 2-card support and values (10+) after all X are penalty, 10+, think about penalty with BOP, Don’t save them, pass the XX 99.9% they will bid
- 1444: even with a good hand, pass, then double later (partner knows you have singleton)
- Jordan after negative double: 2NT is 4# support LR+ (Not possible for 2NT to be natural)
- (1D)-1H-(neg X):
- 1S: Natural NF
- 1NT —\> Clubs one of three hands, 6+ weak, 5+ good (can bid again), heart raise (Wants club lead)
- 2C —\>D: If transferring to their suit is 3# LR+
- 2D—\>H: Transfer to our suit is good raise
- 2H: Our suit is weak raise
- 2NT: 4#+ LR+
- (1C)-1H-(neg X):
- 1S: Natural NF
- 1NT —\> Clubs so LR+
- 2C —\>D: Diamonds competitive or better
- 2D—\>H: good raise
- 2H: weak raise
- 2NT: 4#+ LR+
- Only difference to transfers after 1M (X) is the LR+ into their suit and 2NT is Jordan 4# LR+
- Transfers after: 1M (X), 1M (neg X), 1M (2M)
One other thing:
- Need a LR after (1M)-A-(2M)-2NT … so after an (1X)-1A-(1/2A)-2NT is LR
- Mixed Raise in Comp: Double cue is 4#,7-9
- (1H)-1S-(P)-3♥
- Opponents bid 2 suits at 1-level after you passed
- 1N: 6 to bad 10, 5-5 in other two suits
- In situations where opponents have bid and raised a suit (or opened a weak 2), then partner doubles, we bid a suit, then partner shows a big hand (e.g., with a 2NT bid), then cue bidding opponents suit is a checkback showing a 5-card major, partner can go to 3NT or 4 of the major
- Examples
- (2♥)-X-(P)-2♠-(P)-2NT-(P)-3♥, bidding 3♠ instead would be sign off
- (1♥)-X-(2♥)-2♠-(P)-2NT-3♥
- We open and respond, they bid and raise. 1C-(1S)-2H-(2S). We had this come up and asked Radu.
- 3H vs 4H vs 3S. 3H min 11 to bad 13, 4H plays game opps 11+ so good 13 or more. 3S is fit and slam try.
- 2NT. Denies heart support (see above), should be 2 spade stoppers since you’re a min. (ie, no reason to bid 2NT with one stopper and 12)
- 3NT. Not either of the two above, so max.
- X. Extra values but can’t bid 3NT, trying to get to 3NT.
- 3C. NF 6+
- 3D. 65
- They bid, we overcall, they raise: (1S)-2H-(2S)
- Per Radu: 2nt is always LR in competition. Bidding 2nt nat when they have 8+ spades is not plausible. It’s more important to show a fit, and sometimes you have no space so 2nt in competition is always a fit.
