Chapter 08

Checkbacks: 2-way, 4SF, Spiral, Transfers after 2NT Rebid, Reverses

Card:
  • 2C/2D: All invites go through 2C (2D mandatory), 2D=GF
  • After 2C-2D:
  • P signoff in D
  • 2Y=5, 3Y=good 6
  • 2H/3H: After 1A-1S-1NT-2C-2D, 2H=54, 3H=55
  • oM invite 54 (see 4-4 below) (NEW)
  • 2NT invite (do not invite with flat 11)
  • 3X=good support not interested in NT, may not be 4# in Y
  • 3NT Balanced choice of games: 1A-1A-1NT-2C-2D-3NT: balanced choice of games 5332
  • Over 2D: priorities 4oM, 3#M, 5#, 2N
  • Opener never jumps, so shows splinter
  • 2S reverse 4-4: with 4-4 invite 1m-1H-1NT-2S (NEW)
  • 2NT Club Transfer: (NEW!!!) 1X-1Y-1NT-2NT is not NT, it’s a club Transfer (!!), go through 2C to invite NT
  • 3A: Natural Slam try, jump to 3Y demands control bid, picture bids either self-sufficient suit (1 loser opposite void) or 55 in new suit, or distributional with support for X
  • Self-Splinter above 3Y
  • 4C Gerber/4NT Quant (do we want to eliminate this Gerber)
  • Other: Off in comp except on over takeout double, 2C still invite BPH, on over 1C-1D-1NT … 4/16/26 changed this with Radu, BPH just playing reg NMF (can’t really be GF, and only really do reg NFM if you’re 5431 max and don’t want to play NT)
  • When: 3rd (after opener rebids original suit, could be artificial for suit bid if most economical bid) and 4th suit forcing by UPH
  • Is 3rd Suit Forcing GF. Discussed with Radu 5/10/25, opener is forced to keep bidding, but responder can pass (e.g. 1C-1H-2C-2D-2H, can pass or 1C-1H-2C-2D-3D can pass), but if responder bids again its GF.
  • Priorities: 3# for M, rebid extra length, NT w/ stopper in 4th, raise 4th w/ 4 (rare), punt with least likely rebid
  • Spades: 1C-1D-1H-1S GF; 1C-1D-1H-2S GF (slam interest)
  • Punts: Punt when can’t show support or bid NT or show extra length. Responder should then try to keep the bidding low, rebidding 2nd suit at 2-level always a punt (can jump with very rare 5-6).
  • 2 after a)1-1-1-2 b)1-1-1-2 c)1-1-1-2 d) 1-1-2-2 (tricky one)
  • 3 after a) 1-1-2-2 (opener already denied 4)
  • 2 after a) 1-1-2-2 b) 1-1-1-1
  • 3 after a) 1-1-2-3
  • 1NT-2NT: Reminder 1X-1NT-2NT is also a 17-19 2NT rebid
  • All Transfers: All bids are transfers: CDHS for DHSC
  • Must accept possible sign offs. Must accept when could be signoff
  • Bypass denies. Whatever you bypass you deny

> Examples:

  • 1C-1S-2N:
  • 3C=5+D maybe signing off, must accept
  • 3D=5+S, 4+H GF (partner shows fit)
  • 3H=5+S, may be signing off, must accept
  • 3S=5+C GF
  • 1D-1H-2N:
  • 3C=5+D maybe signoff, must accept
  • 3D=5+H maybe signoff, must accept (bid 3S after if 45)
  • 3H=44 majors GF
  • 3S=5+C GF
  • 1C-1D-2N:
  • 3C=5+D may be signoff
  • 3D=5+D 4H 12+HCP
  • 3H=5+D 4S 12+HCP
  • 3S=5+D 5+C GF
  • 1S-1N-2N: 3CDH could be signoffs
  • 1H-1N-2N: 3CD could be signoffs, 3H is impossible transfer so 55+m GF, 3S 5+C GF
  • 1C-1N-2N: Exception 3C is to play, 3DHS don’t exist, Only one possible game (3N)
  • 1D-1N-2N: Exception 3m to play, 3HS club splinters (couldn’t 2/1)
  • 2/17/26: Six Card slam tries vs 55. 1m-1M-2NT … 4oM direct is 55, transfer to 3M then 4oM is 6 card slam try, then 4NT is KC, vs transfer to 3M then 4NT is quant.
  • Comments from Radu/Joe:
  • 1D-1S-2NT:
  • 3C: D Support
  • 3D: Forced
  • Show H or C shortness, rebid S to show 5
  • 3H: 0-1H, D support, 4# S
  • 3S: 5#S, 3+D
  • 3N: 4#S, 2/3 H, D support, NF
  • 4C: 4#S, 2/3 H, 0-1C, 5/6 D
  • 3D: H
  • 3H: S
  • 3NT would pass COGS
  • 3S: C 55 or better
  • 3NT: to play
  • 4C: KC in major
  • The main ideas is you always raise partner with 3-card support when you’re 5431, min is 11-12 HCP, max is 13-bad 14 HCP, with good 14-17 HCP (couldn’t open 1NT) you bid on after the responders second bid (1H-1S-2D-2H-2S). You may end up in 2m if responder is minimum and prefers the suit. With 4-card support you can’t be 14 HCP because you open NT with 5422, and you would jump with 14 HCP and 5431, so min is 11-12 and max is 13.
  • 2NT ask:
  • 3: 3# min, 3: 3# max, 3: 4# min, 3: 4# max, 3NT: Max 4333
  • 4 if 1m is 1: 5#/4#M
  • 4 if 1m is 1: 5#/4#M
  • 4x: 4#, short (prefer to show short suit with 4-card support, even if 54)
  • Opener: Typically, 17+, Always more in 1st suit, 55 Jump Shift, 56 Plan to bid 6 then 5 twice
  • Responder Slow Down: Ingberman/Lebensohl (7-), cheaper of 4th suit or 2NT to slow auction else GF (but must show 2M if 5# and below slowdown bid)
  • Opener: 2NT/3m1 NF. Opener to bid 3 of what they opened if they don't have something cheaper to bid, bigger is 19-21, if opener needs to force can invent bid in 4th suit.
  • Opener rebid: Cheaper of 3rd suit or 2NT if only 2 suits bid 1D-1NT-2H (2S is slow down)
  • One exception: 1H-1NT-2S, 3m is the slow down, 2NT asks for shape
  • Other: With minor fits, bids below 3NT are about 3NT; With major fits, serious 3NT applies if rules met

Other Competitive bids:

  • 2NT is LR in competitive auctions. (1S)-2H-(2S)-2NT
  • 1H-(2S): 2NT LR 3#+; 1S-(2H)-2NT LR 4#+
  • Doubles of cue bids/artificial bids are “I would have made that bid”. (1H)-1S-(2S)-X or 1D-(1S)-2H-(3H)-X
