Chapter 11
Michaels/U2NT, Defense to Michaels/U2NT, Leaping, (1m)-(1NT)
- After 2 1-level suits: (1C)-P-(1H)-2C \[BUPH\] or any (1X)-P-(1Y)-2X = Michaels (BPH 1NT is Sandwich 1NT 55 so 2C is natural)
After 1NT opponent response:(1X)-P-(1NT)-2X = Michaels if 1X is M, if 1X is m then 2C is 54 and 2D is 55, do it this way because after 2C, 2D asks which is the 5.- After weak 2:
We agreed on, but see Radu alternatives below for discussionOnly (2D)-3D - Balancing: (1X)-P-(P)-2X = Michaels
- After Jacoby Transfer: (1NT)-P-(2D)-2H = Michaels
- After Jacoby 2NT: (1M)-P-(2NT)-3M = Michaels
- Note for Radu: Not playing non-leaping Michaels
Radu Alternates \[for discussion\] doing with Dan too:
- After (1m)-p-(1NT): 2C = majors,
2D = bad 2M overcall (10-13), 2M = good overcall (14-17)
Swapped this in March 2026 with Radu, more fast arrival concept 2M direct is the bad 2M overcall (10-13) and 2D is the strong 2M overcall (14-17)
- After (1m)-p-(1NT)-p-(p): 2om = majors, 2m = natural
- (2M)-3M = we play leaping so no reason to play this as Michaels, Radu plays as asking for a stopper for NT or both minors and a good hand if you bid on (can just play as asking for stopper since that’s unlikely)
- Discussed with Radu 3/19/25: (2D)-3D should still be majors, so you don’t commit to 4 level, then (2D)-4C should be Clubs and a major, with 4D by partner asking which, this is simpler and less error prone than (2D)-4C being hearts and clubs and (2D)-4D being spades and clubs.
Advanced Concepts:
- Meckwell on high level: (1S)-2S-(4S). 4NT ask, 5C p/C, 5D good for H, 5H competitive
- After 3-level can use 4NT as slam interest in minor (1S)-2S-(3S)-4NT
- Auction specific agreements:
- (1H)-P-(1S): Normally, 2NT would be redundant for 2H, both would show minors. So use 2H to show S+C/D and 2NT to show C+D
- See 54/55 above after 1m-1NT
- So over (1C)-2C, 3CD should be invites for HS, and over (1D)-2D, 2NT invite for either or just spades (can correct from hearts), 3D invite for H only. Gavin alternative over 1C-2C, 2D is relay to 2H then next bid NF, so 2HS direct are constructive (2 useful cards).
- Weak escapes: (1C)-2C-2D or (1D)-2D-3C
- Invites: 3CD over 1C-2C. 2NT invites for either or just spades over 1D-2D (can correct from hearts)
\* (1D)-2D: 3D is LRH only; 2NT is for spades. good supp = 3# with 3 features or 4# with 2 features. good supp H = fit with 2 features.
- When two known cue bids use unusual vs unusual because you have two suits to cue
- When one known suit use transfers and cue or transfer cue is the LR+, direct is weakest
- Use X to show values, 10+
- Transfer D to 1H-2H/1S-2S: 3M=weak, 3M-1=Mixed, 8-10, cue/transfer cue=LR+
- U2NT defense: Low to low, high to high, when two known cue bids, low for lower suit, high for higher suit. If it’s a cue of unbid suit, should be GF, of known suit 10+.
- 1m-(2m). 2♥ for clubs, 2♠ for diamonds.
- 1M-(2NT). 3♣ for hearts, 3♦ for spades.
1H-(2H) and 1S-(2S): transfer defense ("xfer def").
Leaping Michaels and Michaels after Weak 2
Cue bidding their weak 2 is regular Michaels (2♥)-3♥see above (2M)-3M is stopper ask or both minors if bid on, so we aren’t distinguishing between slam interest michaels or not hereMeckwell responses apply with 3NT game and4NT minor ask, 4D is strong M raise, 4C is pass or correct \[what is 4H???\]- 4m after weak 2 is leaping michaels
slam interest (monster two suiter, game in your own hand, often 65), 5 of the other M and 5 of that m (2♥)-4♣ - After Leaping Michaels, use same flag bids as after 2NT opening (cheaper for major)
After (2D), 3D is unlimited H & S, 4C is C &H leaping, 4D is C&S leapingchecking with Radu on this if we should do it this way and have (2D)-3D as stopper asksee above, we should do (2D)-3D being majors and (2D)-4C being clubs and major (4D checkback for pick by partner)
